A nationwide Garda roads-policing operation detected almost 3,400 speeding offences during its first four days over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
A nationwide Garda roads-policing operation detected almost 3,400 speeding offences during its first four days over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Gardaí also arrested 121 people on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Almost 310 drivers were detected using a mobile phone or travelling without a seatbelt.
The operation concentrated on four behaviours associated with serious and fatal collisions: speeding, intoxicated driving, mobile-phone use and failure to wear a seatbelt.
Gardaí urged everyone using Irish roads to reduce speed, avoid distractions, wear a seatbelt and never drive after consuming alcohol or drugs.
